Customers in regional NSW have now had access to real-time data on more than one million bus trips across the state.
Nationals Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway announced the milestone, as the new tracking technology system is being rolled out on buses in Orange and Griffith.
“This real-time technology is making it easier for passengers to get to and from work, shopping trips and medical appointments and providing peace of mind for parents picking up their child from the bus stop by sharing important bus information in real time,” Mr Farraway said.
“More than 1,100 buses in 16 regional centres are now fitted with tracking devices, giving commuters up-to-date information in the palm of their hand on where their bus is, its estimated arrival time and how full the bus is.
“The Liberal and Nationals Government is securing a brighter future for NSW families, by improving customer service on our regional public transport network to make it easier to get from A to B.
“Since July 2020, more than a million regional bus trips have been tracked, including 555,000 regular route services and 445,000 school bus services.
“It is changing the way customers use buses to travel to key locations in their communities and making public transport a first-choice option for people in the regions.”
In rolling out the program in the regions, Transport for NSW has worked with more than 75 bus operators and mapped nearly 18,200 bus stops.
Real-time tracking in Griffith and Orange marks the completion of the second phase of the Transport Connected Buses program. The technology has been rolled out across 16 regional cities, 61 operators, more than 1,000 vehicles and close to 1,500 routes.
Transport Connected Bus technology already has been rolled out in Armidale, Bathurst, Bega, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Forbes/Parkes, Grafton, Port Macquarie, Queanbeyan, Tweed Heads, Wagga Wagga, Greater Nowra, Albury and Tamworth.
They can access real-time data for Orange bus services using the Transport for NSW Trip Planner tool at www.transportnsw.info or through a range of apps. A list of available apps can be found at transportnsw.info/apps
